Streamlining research using simultaneous SAXS and WAXS measurements

The Swedish Materials Science beamline has a world-leading instrument setup for simultaneous SAXS and WAXS measurements. This capability enables a fuller characterisation of materials composed of various phases and different sizes e.g. temporal information about phase and precipitate formations and their dynamic interactions.

The PETRA III Swedish Materials Science beamline is a high energy X-ray facility, which was commissioned for Swedish research and innovation in materials science and engineering.

An instrument setup for simultaneously capturing SAXS and WAXS data sets is one of this beamline’s key capabilities. This capability is important because it means that materials composed of various phases and precipitates can be fully characterised - with temporal information about phase and precipitate formations and dynamics.

The simultaneous SAXS/WAXS instrumentation has been refined since the Swedish beamline first became operational in 2019. The refinements mean that the PETRA III Swedish Materials Science beamline is the most advanced SAXS/WAXS synchrotron instrument in the world today.

To support researchers straightforwardly make the most of this capability, a CeXS Technical Report is being prepared that:

  • Describes the PETRA III Swedish beamline’s simultaneous SAXS/WAXS instrument setup
  • Illustrates the instrument’s capabilities using a furnace sample environment
  • Provides guidelines for streamlining your research process - from research plan to experimental data results - exemplified by information from two research cases.

It is expected that this Technical Report will be published in autumn 2023.
