A1 Priority - Help shape the future of the Swedish Materials Science beamline

9-10 September 2026 in Hamburg, Germany

Published Aug 05, 2026

The Swedish Materials Science beamline at PETRA III has received the highest-priority rating in the Swedish Research Council's 2025 needs assessment. CeXS is now inviting the research community to help shape the proposal for the beamline's future direction at a workshop on 9-10 September in Hamburg.

The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, VR) regularly reviews its portfolio of research infrastructures to ensure that they are nationally important and capable of enabling valuable future research and innovation.

The review process has two main stages:

  1. Needs assessment: This evaluates whether the infrastructure is needed by a substantial community of researchers at Swedish universities, research institutes and companies.
  2. Proposal: This sets out the scientific direction and organisational plans for the infrastructure's operation.

In the 2025 needs assessment, the submission demonstrating the continued need for the Swedish Materials Science beamline at PETRA III received an A1 rating - the highest priority. Read more on this  Swedish Research Council's website.

As a result, CeXS, acting on behalf of the Swedish research community, is likely to be invited to submit a proposal in early 2027. That proposal should set the scientific direction and a plan for the operations in the period 2027-2030/2.

CeXS believes it is important that the research community has an opportunity to shape this proposal. We are therefore organising a lunch-to-lunch workshop on 9-10 September 2026, in Hamburg, providing a forum for comprehensive discussion about the future direction of the Swedish beamline.
